Travel notices are designed to inform travelers and clinicians about current health issues related to specific destinations. These issues may arise from disease outbreaks, special events or gatherings, natural disasters, or other conditions that may affect travelers’ health.

  1. Some international destinations have circulating poliovirus. Before any international travel, make sure you are up to date on your polio vaccines.
  2. Some countries in Africa are reporting increased numbers of cases (outbreaks) of measles. All travelers to Africa, including infants and pre-school aged children, should be fully vaccinated against measles, according to CDC immunization schedules.
  3. Dengue is a risk in many parts of Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Some countries are reporting increased numbers of cases of the disease. Travelers to the Americas can protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites.
  4. There is an outbreak of Lassa fever in several states in Nigeria.
  5. There is an outbreak of Nipah virus disease in several districts in Bangladesh. This outbreak is related to the consumption of date palm sap.
  6. There is an outbreak of diphtheria in several states in Nigeria. Vaccination against diphtheria is essential to protect against disease. If you are traveling to an affected area, you should be up to date with your diphtheria vaccines.
  7. There is an outbreak of chikungunya in Paraguay. Most cases have been reported in the Asunción metropolitan area. Mosquitos spread the virus that causes chikungunya.
  8. On February 13, 2023, Equatorial Guinea declared an outbreak of Marburg virus disease. Confirmed cases have been reported in the Kie Ntem Province.
  9. On February 6, 2022, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria. Travelers should avoid nonessential travel to southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria.
  10. In 2021– early 2022, a Japanese encephalitis (JE) outbreak occurred in parts of Australia. The outbreak was focused in rural areas surrounding the Murray River, particularly near the border of Victoria and New South Wales. In November 2022, JE virus was detected in pigs in the Murray River region, confirming risk for JE in humans during the current Australian summer season.
  11. Dengue is a risk in many parts of Africa and the Middle East. Some countries are reporting increased numbers of cases of the disease. Travelers to Africa and the Middle East can protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites.
  12. Due to heavy rainfall, most of the states in Nigeria are experiencing flooding (see map). If you travel to Nigeria, obey all instructions from local authorities.
  13. Due to record rainfall, Pakistan is experiencing flooding, particularly in Balochistan and Sindh Provinces.
  14. Some travelers who have spent time in Mexico have been infected with multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella Newport.
