WOHD

World Oral Health Day is observed annually on 20 March, and launches a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of oral hygiene.

Your mouth is a mirror to your body and reflects your general health and well-being.
Avoid risk factors, adopt good oral hygiene habits and have regular dental check-ups to help protect your mouth and body.
- Eat healthy.
- Brush your teeth at least twice daily.
- Get fit.
- Quit smoking.
It is never too early or too late to start looking after your mouth; your body will thank you.

Sugars and Dental Caries

  • Dental caries is the most common noncommunicable disease worldwide. Caries can cause pain and infection, which may result in tooth extraction.
  • Severe dental caries is a frequent cause of absenteeism at school or work.
  • Free sugars are the essential dietary factor in the development of dental caries. Dental caries develops when bacteria in the mouth metabolize sugars to produce acid that demineralizes the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel and dentine).
  • Limiting free sugars intake to less than 10% of total energy intake minimizes the risk of dental caries throughout the lifecourse.
  • Severe dental caries is a frequent cause of absenteeism at school or work.
