Background:
In the 13th century, the Gotthard Pass region at the heart of the Alps became navigable and quickly developed into a strategically and economically important north–south trade route. As a result, the alpine valleys of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden—located at the northern foot of the Gotthard massif—emerged as a focal point of European power politics. Their inhabitants formed a pact of mutual assistance that laid the foundation for what would eventually become Switzerland.
Today, Switzerland is a federal state in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the north; Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein to the east; Italy to the south; and France to the west.
Switzerland’s independence and long‑standing neutrality have been formally recognized by major European powers. The country remained outside both World Wars. While Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, its close economic ties with Europe and its active role in the United Nations and other international organizations have gradually reshaped the practical meaning of its traditional neutrality.
