Fast and clever, the Saluki has been a hunting and guard dog for desert people in the Arabian Peninsula for 5,000 years.
The Saluki dog has become a guide for desert people in the Arabian Peninsula. Thanks to the speed, wisdom and loyalty of the dog, Salukis are very popular with Bedouins, who use dogs for hunting, keeping and other services in everyday life. The name of the breed comes from the city of Saluk in Yemen, where the dog was probably bred for the first time.
Saluki has traditionally been used to hunt gazelles, rabbits, and foxes, and today this tradition is imitated in dog sports. They are trained to run at 68 km / h, which makes them one of the fastest dogs in the world at longer distances. The tradition of racing was the focal point of ancient Bedouin culture, where nomads raised animals and trained them to travel the desert.
Many in the Gulf mark this tradition by participating in Saluki breeds each year. Entertainment is growing in the Arab world - especially in the GCC, where many championships are held throughout the year.
