What Are International Vehicle Registration Codes?
International vehicle registration codes are used to indicate the country or territory in which a motor vehicle’s registration plate was issued.
These codes are commonly displayed as letters on a vehicle’s licence plate or on a separate oval-shaped sticker attached to the rear of the vehicle. They are officially known as the Distinguishing Sign of the State of Registration.
The system is recognized under international road-traffic agreements, including the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic of 1949 and the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of 1968.

Important Notes About Vehicle Codes
- Some countries use one-letter codes, while others use two or three letters.
- Vehicle codes may differ from ISO two-letter and three-letter country codes.
- Some territories and dependencies have their own registration codes.
- Codes may change when countries change their official name or registration system.
- Some modern licence plates incorporate the identifying code directly into the plate design.
- A separate oval sticker may still be required when the plate does not clearly display the country code.
Before Driving Abroad
A vehicle registration code identifies where the vehicle is registered, but it does not confirm that the driver or vehicle meets every legal requirement for international travel.
- Confirm that your driving licence is accepted at your destination.
- Check whether you need an International Driving Permit.
- Carry your original driving licence together with the permit.
- Confirm that your motor insurance covers international driving.
- Carry the vehicle registration certificate and rental agreement.
- Check border-crossing and vehicle-import requirements.
- Review local speed limits, road signs, parking rules, and toll systems.
- Check whether reflective jackets, warning triangles, or other safety equipment are required.
- Confirm whether a separate country-identification sticker must be displayed.
