🇨🇩 Democratic Republic of the Congo Travel Guide
The DRC is one of Africa's last great wildernesses — home to the world's second largest tropical rainforest, half of Africa's freshwater, and an extraordinary concentration of endemic wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. For the adventurous traveller willing to go off the beaten path, it offers mountain gorilla trekking, active volcano hikes, and river journeys through untouched jungle that rank among the most remarkable experiences on the planet.
Top Attractions in DR Congo
🦍 Virunga National Park
Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to nearly a third of the world's critically endangered mountain gorillas, as well as active volcanoes, hippos, and chimpanzees.
🌋 Nyiragongo Volcano
One of the world's most active volcanoes, featuring the largest lava lake on Earth. The overnight hike to the crater rim and the sight of the glowing molten lake at night is one of Africa's most unforgettable adventures.

The world's deepest river and Africa's mightiest waterway. A multi-day river journey through the Congo Basin offers an unparalleled window into remote villages, dense jungle, and extraordinary river life found nowhere else.
🐒 Lomami National Park
A vast, recently established park in the heart of the Congo Basin rainforest protecting the bonobo — humanity's closest relative — along with forest elephants, okapis, and hundreds of endemic bird species.

Background
🏛️ The territory was colonised by Belgium in the late 19th century under King Leopold II, whose brutal exploitation of the Congo Free State became one of history's most notorious humanitarian catastrophes. The country gained independence on June 30, 1960, and was subsequently known as Zaire under the decades-long dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko before reverting to its current name in 1997.
💎 The DRC holds some of the world's largest reserves of cobalt, coltan, diamonds, gold, and copper — resources that have fuelled both significant economic potential and decades of conflict, particularly in the mineral-rich eastern provinces. The country remains one of the world's largest producers of cobalt, a critical mineral in electric vehicle batteries.
🌿 Despite its challenges, the DRC is undergoing gradual development and its extraordinary natural heritage — Virunga's gorillas, the Congo River system, and its vast untouched rainforests — represents one of the most significant ecological treasures remaining on the planet.
