Cities Around the World with IATA Airport Codes

As a travel journalist, I’ve had the chance to explore numerous lesser-known locales that defy expectations and offer delightful surprises. One such place is Enterprise, Nevada. Tucked away in the southwestern corner of the Las Vegas Valley, Enterprise is a flourishing, vibrant community that has grown out of the desolate desert and blossomed into an exciting destination, embracing the heart of Nevada and offering unique attractions for locals and visitors alike.

Location

Situated just 12 miles southwest of the bustling Las Vegas Strip, Enterprise is nestled in the heart of Clark County, Nevada. While it doesn't have a neighboring river, it does enjoy proximity to the awe-inspiring Lake Mead to the east, which is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. If you're craving the scent of the sea, the nearest ocean beach would be California's picturesque Santa Monica Beach, which is approximately a 4-hour drive away.

A Brief History

Enterprise was born from humble beginnings. Founded in December 1996, this relatively young city initially served as a buffer zone for the ever-expanding Las Vegas. The history of this region, however, is as old as the arid mountains that envelop it. Indigenous people have lived here for thousands of years, and their presence can still be felt through the area's rich cultural heritage.

Population and Area

Over the past few decades, Enterprise has seen exponential growth, morphing from a mere desert town into a bustling city. As of the last census, Enterprise boasted a population of over 160,000. The city stretches over a sizeable area of approximately 47.5 square miles, thus providing ample space for its residents and visitors.

Transportation and Access

Despite its close proximity to Las Vegas, Enterprise offers an entirely different vibe. It is easily accessible by car via the Bruce Woodbury Beltway (Interstate 215). The McCarran International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the USA, is conveniently situated a short drive north of Enterprise, ensuring that the city is well-connected with the rest of the world.

For local transportation, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) provides bus services, making every corner of the city accessible.

Education: University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)

While Enterprise itself does not host a large university, it is in close proximity to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). UNLV is a mere 20-minute drive away, and it's one of the top public research universities in the United States, boasting diverse academic programs and a vibrant student life.

Top Attractions and Recommendations

While Enterprise may lack the neon lights and casinos of its infamous neighbor, it more than makes up for it with its distinctive attractions.

1. Town Square Las Vegas: Located on the north edge of Enterprise, Town Square Las Vegas is an open-air shopping, dining, office, and entertainment center development. With a European village-style layout, it offers visitors an immersive experience with top-tier dining, shopping, and entertainment options.

2. Exploration Peak Park: Offering spectacular views of the Las Vegas Valley, this 2,846-foot-tall mountain park at the entrance of the Mountain’s Edge community is perfect for a gentle hike or picnic. It features trails, picnic areas, and a Native American village replica.

3. Southern Highlands Golf Club: For golf enthusiasts, the Southern Highlands Golf Club offers a pristine course that will test your skills. The club also offers luxury accommodations and fine dining options.

4. The M Resort Spa Casino: Although technically not within Enterprise's city limits, The M Resort is located just a few minutes to the south and offers a more relaxed, local alternative to the Strip's mega-resorts.

5. Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area: A short drive south of Enterprise, you'll find the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. This spot is renowned for its petroglyphs – ancient rock art that tells the story of early indigenous people. A trip here is a must for history and nature lovers alike.

So, if you find yourself venturing to the Silver State, consider stopping by Enterprise. It may not be as globally renowned as Las Vegas, but it offers a unique blend of history, outdoor activities, shopping, and entertainment that promises an unforgettable visit.
