Background
🇬🇧 Hong Kong was a British Crown Colony from 1842 following the First Opium War, and later expanded with the 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. On July 1, 1997, sovereignty was transferred to China under the "one country, two systems" framework, which promised Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy, its own legal system, and civil liberties until at least 2047.
💹 Hong Kong rapidly developed into one of Asia's four "Tiger Economies," becoming a global financial hub with one of the world's freest economies, a major international port, and a leading centre for banking, trade, and commerce. Its stock exchange is among the largest in the world by market capitalisation.
🌆 Today Hong Kong blends its Cantonese cultural roots with its colonial legacy and modern Chinese identity to create a uniquely cosmopolitan society — a place of extraordinary energy, culinary excellence, architectural ambition, and one of the highest concentrations of skyscrapers anywhere on Earth.
