A Glimpse into Kosovo’s History

Kosovo’s history is deeply layered, shaped by ancient civilizations, empires, and modern conflict. The region was inhabited by Illyrian tribes and later became part of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, it was a center of the Serbian Empire before falling under Ottoman rule in the 15th century. This period introduced Islam and saw a rise in Albanian cultural influence.

In the 20th century, Kosovo was incorporated into Yugoslavia and later became an autonomous province within Serbia. Ethnic tensions escalated in the 1990s, culminating in the Kosovo War (1998–1999). NATO intervened to stop the violence, and Kosovo was placed under UN administration. On February 17, 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, a move recognized by many countries but still disputed by others.

Current Political Landscape

As of 2025, Kosovo remains a partially recognized state. Over 100 UN member countries recognize its independence, but Serbia, Russia, and several others do not. This affects Kosovo’s ability to join international organizations like the UN.

The political scene is currently unstable. The February 2025 parliamentary elections saw the ruling Vetëvendosje party win the most seats but fall short of a majority. Attempts to form a coalition government have failed, leading to a political deadlock and the possibility of snap elections. This impasse has delayed key reforms and complicated EU-mediated normalization talks with Serbia.

Despite internal challenges, Kosovo continues to pursue closer ties with the European Union and maintains a pro-Western stance. The country is striving to strengthen democratic institutions and improve governance, though progress is slow due to political fragmentation and unresolved ethnic tensions.
