The largest lagoon in the world, encircling the main island of Grande Terre with the second-longest barrier reef on the planet — a breathtaking marine wonderland of coral gardens, shipwrecks, manta rays, sea turtles, and rare dugongs.

A masterpiece of architecture by Renzo Piano, designed to echo traditional Kanak ceremonial houses — housing a stunning collection of indigenous artworks, cultural artefacts, and living celebrations of Melanesian heritage.

Background
⛏️ The territory holds roughly 10 percent of the world's known nickel reserves, making it one of the wealthiest territories in Oceania. Nickel mining and processing form the backbone of the economy, supplemented by significant annual fiscal transfers from metropolitan France and a growing tourism industry.
🌺 The indigenous Kanak people — Melanesians who have inhabited the islands for over 3,000 years — make up 41% of the population and have maintained a rich culture of clan-based society, customary land ownership, and traditional ceremonies. The Kanak flag has flown alongside the French tricolour since 2010, symbolising a hard-won cultural recognition.
🗳️ New Caledonia's political status has been a defining issue for decades. Following the violent independence conflicts of the 1980s, the landmark Nouméa Accord of 1998 granted broad autonomy and set a path for self-determination referendums. The third and final referendum in 2021 voted to remain French, though negotiations over the territory's permanent future status continue.
