Background:
Taiwan’s modern history is shaped by multiple periods of foreign rule and political transition. During the 17th century, the island experienced brief Dutch and Spanish presence before coming under Qing Empire administration in 1683. Following China’s defeat in the First Sino‑Japanese War (1894–1895), the Qing government signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding Taiwan to Japan. Japan ruled Taiwan from 1895 until the end of World War II in 1945, during which time extensive infrastructure and administrative systems were developed.
After Japan’s surrender in 1945, Taiwan was placed under the administration of the Republic of China (ROC). Following the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the ROC government relocated to Taiwan, while the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was established on the mainland. Today, the PRC maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory, whereas the government in Taipei operates as the Republic of China with its own democratic system, military, and economy. Taiwan’s political status remains a complex and sensitive issue in international relations.
