Background

🇻🇮 The US Virgin Islands were originally inhabited by the Ciboney, Arawak, and Carib peoples. Christopher Columbus visited in 1493 and named the islands after Saint Ursula and her 11,000 martyrs (Las Once Mil Vírgenes).
🇩🇰 Denmark colonized the islands in the 1600s, establishing plantation economy based on sugar and slave labor. The Danish West India Company built forts and traded through Charlotte Amalie, which became a major Caribbean port.
🇺🇸 The United States purchased the islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million in gold, primarily to secure a strategic naval base during World War I. Residents gained US citizenship in 1927.
🏖️ Today, tourism dominates the economy. The USVI is also a major cruise ship hub and a gateway to the British Virgin Islands. Unlike Puerto Rico, the USVI does not have income tax for residents, but it follows most federal laws.
