BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN WEATHER

Best Time to Visit & Weather Tips

Brunei sits 4–5° north of the Equator — BSB is hot and humid year-round (26–33 °C / 79–91 °F). There is no true dry season, but rainfall varies considerably by month.

★ Best February – April Lower rainfall and clearer skies — ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Shoulder May – September Warm with short afternoon showers. Good for budget travel; hotels are quieter.
Wettest October – January Northeast monsoon brings heavy rain and occasional flooding. Focus on indoor sights.
Weather Tip: Pack a compact umbrella — afternoon downpours appear without warning even in drier months. Light breathable clothing is essential year-round, and a thin layer is useful inside air-conditioned mosques, restaurants, and museums.

 Local Food Recommendations

Bruneian cuisine blends Malay, Chinese, and indigenous Bornean influences. Food is affordable and found in food courts, night markets, and kedai kopi (coffee shops).

Ambuyat — Brunei's unofficial national dish. A sticky sago-palm porridge served with dipping sauces (cacah), eaten with a bamboo fork called a chandas. A unique cultural experience not to be missed.
Nasi Katok — The ultimate comfort food: steamed rice with fried chicken and sambal chilli, sold all day for around BND 1. Impossibly cheap and satisfying.
Kelupis — Glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk and wrapped in palm leaves — a popular breakfast snack that is light, fragrant, and satisfying.
Roti Canai — Flaky layered flatbread with dhal or chicken curry, best enjoyed at a kedai kopi with sweet teh tarik (condensed-milk pulled tea) in the morning.
Satay Brunei — Grilled marinated chicken or beef skewers with peanut sauce and ketupat (compressed rice cake). Widely available at Tamu Kianggeh Night Market.
Kuih Melayu (Malay Cakes) — Colourful bite-sized traditional sweets made from rice flour, coconut milk, and palm sugar. Great snacks or edible souvenirs from morning markets.
Dining Tip: Brunei is a Muslim-majority country — pork and alcohol are not served publicly. The food scene is rich and diverse nonetheless. For the most authentic experience, visit Kiarong Wet Market in the morning or Tamu Kianggeh in the evening.

 Essential Tips for Tourists

 Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and government buildings. Women should carry a scarf. Lightweight linen or cotton works best in the heat.

 Photography

Always ask permission before photographing locals. Photography is generally allowed in non-prayer areas of mosques — be respectful and discreet.

 Getting Around

Public buses are infrequent. Taxis and the Dart ride-hailing app are most practical. The city centre is walkable, though midday heat can be intense.

 Alcohol & Customs

Alcohol is not sold publicly. Non-Muslim visitors may bring a limited duty-free allowance. Respect local customs and always greet with a smile.

 Budget

BSB is surprisingly affordable — most museums are free. Meals cost BND 2–15. The Singapore Dollar is accepted at par, handy for visitors from Singapore.

 Connectivity

Free WiFi at most hotels and malls. Purchase a local SIM (DST or Progresif) at the airport for affordable data coverage across BSB.

 Safety

Brunei is one of Southeast Asia's safest countries with very low crime rates. Tap water is safe and drinkable throughout BSB.

 Visa on Arrival

Many nationalities receive visa-free or visa-on-arrival access for 14–30 days. Check with the Brunei Ministry of Foreign Affairs for your specific country.
