Discover Michigan

Michigan is a unique two-peninsula state defined by its relationship with the Great Lakes, holding about 20% of the world's surface fresh water. From the industrial innovation and soul of Detroit to the untouched wilderness of the Upper Peninsula (U.P.), Michigan offers a legendary mix of urban culture and outdoor adventure. It is the birthplace of the modern automotive industry and Motown music, a place where you are never more than six miles from a lake or 85 miles from a Great Lake.

Best Time to Visit Michigan

  • June–August: The ultimate time for "Lake Life." Enjoy the beaches of Lake Michigan, boat trips to Mackinac Island, and the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City.
  • September–October: Spectacular fall colors, especially in the Upper Peninsula. Perfect for scenic drives and exploring cider mills.
  • January–February: A paradise for winter sports lovers, from downhill skiing in the North to the world-famous pond hockey tournaments.

Tip: If you plan to visit Mackinac Island in the summer, remember that cars are banned—bring comfortable walking shoes or be ready to rent a bicycle!

History

Originally settled by Indigenous peoples like the Ojibwe and Odawa, Michigan became a center for the French fur trade in the 17th century. Admitted as the 26th state in 1837, it transformed into an industrial powerhouse in the early 20th century when Henry Ford pioneered the assembly line in Detroit. Michigan’s history is one of innovation, from the "Arsenal of Democracy" during WWII to the cultural revolution of the Motown sound that changed music forever.

Tourist Tips for Michigan

  • The "Hand" Map: Locals use their right hand to show where they live in the Lower Peninsula (the "Mitten"). Use it to help people give you directions!
  • Mighty Mac: Crossing the Mackinac Bridge connects the two peninsulas. It is one of the world's longest suspension bridges—be prepared for height and wind.
  • Weather: Michigan weather can change rapidly. Always pack layers, especially when visiting the coastal areas or the Upper Peninsula.
  • "Yoopers": Residents of the Upper Peninsula are called Yoopers. They are famously friendly and proud of their rugged, natural heritage.
  • Great Lakes Safety: The lakes are inland seas. Respect the water; rip currents and weather conditions can be serious even on calm days.

Major City: Detroit

The Motor City is in the midst of a grand revival. Explore the Detroit Institute of Arts, catch a game at Comerica Park, or dine in the historic Corktown neighborhood.
