📖 Historical Background

The Seychelles islands remained uninhabited for centuries before being visited by European explorers. France formally claimed the islands in 1756 and named them after Jean Moreau de Séchelles, the French Minister of Finance.

Following years of rivalry between France and Great Britain, the islands were ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Paris in 1814. During the nineteenth century, settlers, traders, and former slaves from Africa, Europe, India, and China helped shape the multicultural society that exists today.

Seychelles became independent in 1976 and joined the Commonwealth. Since the introduction of a new constitution and democratic reforms in 1993, the country has developed into a stable island nation with tourism, fisheries, and financial services forming the backbone of its economy.
